Superstitions & Traditions

tra⋅di⋅tion
 –noun
1.
the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, esp. by word of mouth or by practice: a story that has come down to us by popular tradition.

Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
And a silver sixpence in your shoe

How many of us are so familiar with these words? Throughout the ages this rhyme has traveled all over. From our mothers, and their mothers, and so on. These words will no doubt leave lasting impression in our hearts and memories. Although originated in Victorian times, these customs are still carried out. Here is the first representation:

The "Something Old" represents the couples friends who will hopefully remain close during the marriage. Also as tradition would have it, an old garter formerly worn by a happily married woman would be given to the bride in hope that her happiness in marriage would be passed on to the new bride.

Today - an heirloom hairbrush to be given to the bride to use on the day of her wedding, and cameo broach to be worn on the handle of her bridal bouquet, or a beautiful handkerchief for the wiping of her tears and/or that of her grooms'. Whatever your fancy these items should hold significant value and meaning to the giver as well as the recipient.

With today's' bride these customs are not just for the moments leading up to the ceremony, but can be showcased throughout their entire wedding day. Based on your style and preference you can create this "Something Old" tradition to work for you and the magic of your day.

Here are some ideas to consider when utilizing this tradition with:

A) An Era,

B) Timepiece Items

C) Music

Happy Planning!
